Is Goal Setting Really That Important?

In the journey of personal and professional development, the compass that often guides us to success is goal setting. Whether it's the pursuit of a career milestone, a healthier lifestyle, or simply a more organized routine, setting goals provides us with a roadmap to follow, a sense of purpose to fuel our efforts, and a means to measure our progress. In this blog, we discuss reasons why goal setting is not just a task, but a transformative tool that propels us towards our dreams, fosters motivation, and nurtures an empowered sense of accomplishment.

Why do you think that is? Is goal setting really that important?

In this blog, I’m going to explain the importance of goal setting.

Is Goal Setting A Waste Of Time?

Have you ever found yourself in a rut and felt like you don't have much direction or motivation at the moment?  🙋🏻‍♀️ I know I have!

We’ve all been told since elementary school to set a goal, at least one goal for ourselves for the school year. After we are finished with school and out into the "real" world, our goal-setting exercises can easily fall by the wayside.

However, statistically, it’s proven that when you set goals and clearly identify them, you are much more likely to achieve them.

In fact, according to this article in Forbes, you are 1.2-1.4 times more likely to achieve your goals if you have them clearly defined and written out. To put those numbers into context, you are 20-40% more likely to achieve your goals this way than if you don’t set goals at all, or just keep them in your head! Goal setting out loud is really effective!

As Michael Hyatt points out in his book Your Best Year Ever, Doctor Gail Matthews from Dominican University found that you are 42% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down and have a clear vision of them.

That’s some pretty good rationale and motivation to use goal-setting methods to define what we want in life and work towards it!

What Gets In The Way of Setting Goals?

There are so many things that can get in the way of achieving our goals.  Money, time, support, resources, mental blocks - there are so many contributing factors that come into play when we try to set and work towards goals.

What gets in the way for you? I encourage you to be super honest with yourself and analyze the challenges you face in achieving your goals and goal setting.

Overcome To Achieve

We must overcome our challenges in order to achieve our goals, and no one can achieve our goals for us. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to these things.  How can you help yourself when you’ve found yourself struggling to progress on one of your goals? Go back to your original goal-setting exercises and find ways to make progress day by day. You don’t need to have it all solved at once!
